Website Technology Checker
Tech stack, CDN and anti-bot detection
What Is the Website Technology Checker?
The Website Technology Checker shows what a site is built with and, more importantly for scrapers, what's guarding it. It sends a plain request the way a simple scraper would, renders the page in a real browser, and checks headers, cookies and page code against about 100 signatures. You get the CDN, WAF and bot protection in front of the site, its platform and tooling, and a plain-English verdict on how hard it is to scrape.
Key Features
Know the Defenses Before You Scrape
The most expensive mistake in a new scraping project is picking tools before you know what you're up against. A site on plain Nginx with no bot protection is happy with datacenter proxies and a simple HTTP client. A site behind DataDome or Kasada will burn through cheap IPs in minutes. Checking first saves you from paying for the wrong proxies.
How the Difficulty Rating Works
The checker combines two signals. First it sends a plain request from a datacenter IP and records whether it got through or was challenged or blocked. Then it looks for bot management vendors in cookies, headers and scripts. Enterprise systems like Akamai Bot Manager, DataDome, HUMAN and Kasada push the rating to hard, and an outright block makes it very hard. Each rating comes with advice on which proxy type to plan for.
Common Use Cases
- Checking a target's anti-bot protection before quoting a scraping job
- Choosing between datacenter, residential and mobile proxies
- Finding out which CMS or framework a competitor uses
- Working out why your scraper suddenly gets 403 errors
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Website Technology Checker free?
Yes. It's free with a ProxyHorizon account, and every account gets 25 runs a day shared across all our data tools. You can read about the tool without signing in, but running it needs an account because each run fetches live data.
How accurate is the detection?
It matches about 100 signatures on headers, cookies and page code, and shows the evidence for each match. Well-hidden setups can slip through, and a vendor that's installed but idle will still show up.
What does “plain request blocked” mean?
The checker sent a normal request from a datacenter IP, like a basic scraper would. A 403, a 429 or a challenge page means the site filters that kind of traffic, so you'll need residential or mobile proxies and probably a real browser.
Which proxies do I need for a site rated hard?
Usually rotating residential or mobile proxies combined with a headless browser that manages fingerprints, or a web unblocker that handles challenges for you. Datacenter proxies rarely survive enterprise bot management.
Is it an alternative to Wappalyzer or BuiltWith?
For a quick look, yes. It covers the most common technologies plus the security layer those tools tend to skip, but it doesn't try to catalog every plugin.
