That isn’t a trick unique to Surfshark. Nearly every VPN sells a cheap first term and a pricier second one. Most pricing pages print the second part in the smallest font they can get away with.

Notice the months. The 2-year plan runs for 27 months and the 1-year plan for 15, because Surfshark currently throws in 3 extra months on both. Nobody has ever complained about this kind of math.
Here’s the catch: the $2.49 is an average. You pay the full $67.23 on day one, then nothing more until the term ends.
It’s cheap the way a giant pack of toilet paper is cheap. Great value per roll, big number at checkout.
Every plan runs the same VPN, with unlimited devices on one account. The plans differ in what gets bolted on around it.

Starter gets you the full VPN: every server, unlimited devices, split tunneling, a double-hop mode and an ad blocker. If you’re fuzzy on what the tunnel itself does, here’s how a VPN works.
It also includes Alternative ID, which creates a masked email and a made-up persona for sign-ups you don’t trust. Join a sketchy coupon site as “Alex from Nowhere”, and the site never learns your real name or inbox.
2One: The VPN Plus a Security Guard
One adds Surfshark Antivirus, Alert and scam protection. The antivirus scans in real time and on a schedule. Alert warns you when your email, card or ID number shows up in a leak. Scam protection flags phishing emails and scam texts.
None of that is exciting. Neither is a smoke alarm, right up until the kitchen fills with smoke.
3One+: Everything, Plus a Data Broker Bouncer
One+ adds Incogni, a service that asks data brokers and people-search sites to delete your details, so you don’t have to. It works for residents of the US, UK, EU, Switzerland and Canada.
New US customers also get identity theft coverage of up to $1M for restoration costs, except in New York State. It’s the plan for people who Googled themselves once and didn’t enjoy it.
The Renewal Price Nobody Prints in Big Letters
Here’s the part the headline price leaves out. When your first term ends, Surfshark renews you at its standard rate. The 2-year plan then renews for 1 year at a time, not 2.

Starter jumps from $2.49 to about $6.58 a month, roughly 2.6 times the intro rate. One nearly triples.
One+ has the funniest line on the table. Its $119 renewal bill is smaller than its $121.23 first bill, and it still costs you more. The first bill covered 27 months. The renewal covers 12. Welcome to subscription math.
These numbers come from Surfshark’s own renewal price page, which is refreshingly open about them. The same page says the renewal prices shown may be part of an A/B price test. Somewhere, a spreadsheet is having a great time.
Our take: the renewal price is still fair by VPN standards. It’s only a shock if nobody warned you. Now somebody has.
Monthly, 1-Year or 2-Year: What 39 Months Cost You
The 2-year plan wins, and not narrowly. To compare terms fairly, we priced 39 months of Starter. That’s one full 2-year term plus one renewal.

Paying monthly costs $641.55 over the same stretch. At that point it isn’t a subscription anymore. It’s a hobby.
The 1-year plan looks sensible until you compare the first bills. It buys 15 months for $50.85, while the 2-year plan buys 27 months for $67.23. Those 12 extra months cost only $16.38, about $1.37 a month. After that, both plans renew at the same $79.
When monthly makes sense: one trip abroad or a short project. For anything longer, the 2-year plan plus the 30-day refund window is a cheaper way to “just try it”.
The 30-Cent Upgrade That Makes Starter Look Silly
Here’s the payoff we promised. On the 2-year plan, One costs $75.33 and Starter costs $67.23. The difference is $8.10 over 27 months, about 30 cents a month.
For those 30 cents, you get antivirus, data leak alerts and scam protection. That’s a security suite for less than a pack of gum.
It gets sillier at renewal. Surfshark’s standalone antivirus renews at $99 a year. Surfshark One also renews at $99 a year, and it includes that antivirus and the VPN. At that point, the VPN comes free with your antivirus.
The same logic applies higher up. At renewal, Starter plus the Incogni add-on costs $126.88 a year. One+ costs $119 and throws in antivirus and alerts. Buying the pieces separately is the expensive way to get less.

Our take: One on the 2-year plan is the best Surfshark deal for most people. Starter only wins if you’ll never want antivirus, and you’re sure about that.
Add-Ons: Small Prices That Add Up
Surfshark sells a few extras for any plan. Most appear in your account after you buy, so here are the renewal rates from Surfshark’s price list.

A dedicated IP is the add-on most worth a second look. Nobody else shares your address, so you see fewer “I’m not a robot” boxes and fewer extra login checks. It’s your own parking spot instead of circling the lot.
Watch out: add-ons renew alongside your plan, on the same yearly cycle. A $45 dedicated IP plus a $79 Starter renewal is a $124 bill, not a $79 one.
Free Trial, Refunds and the Rest of the Fine Print

Surfshark’s pricing page often offers new customers a 7-day free trial, though it doesn’t appear on every visit. When it does, you pick a plan, pay $0 today, and get charged the full term price when the trial ends unless you cancel first.
Two catches. The trial only works with a card or PayPal. And “unlimited devices” shrinks to 3 during the trial. Unlimited, but trial-sized.
2The 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee
Every plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Ask within 30 days of signing up, and you get your money back. If the trial is the test drive, this is the return policy.
One exception: the Alternative Number add-on can have different refund terms, so check before you add it.
3Tax, Currency and That “Save 85%” Badge
Prices on the page exclude tax. Surfshark adds sales tax or VAT at checkout and recalculates it at each renewal, using the rate on the day you’re charged.
It may also bill you in your card’s currency rather than the one on screen. If your bank converts it, the bank’s fee is on you.
And the discount badges? Surfshark measures “save 85%” against its monthly price. NordVPN measures its savings against its renewal price, so the two percentages can’t be compared directly.

Two things stand out. Surfshark has the lowest renewal price here, and it’s the only one without a device limit. If you’re covering phones, laptops, tablets and a smart TV, that second point is worth real money.
