About this tool

What Is the Favicon Extractor & Checker?

The Favicon Extractor & Checker reads a site's head tags and web app manifest, collects every favicon, app icon and manifest icon it declares, adds the default /favicon.ico and requests each one to confirm it loads. You see them in a gallery with sizes, file types and weights, a coverage check against what browsers, Google and phones ask for, and the markup for a complete set.

Key Features

Every icon from link tags, the web app manifest and /favicon.ico
A load check on each icon: status, file type and size in KB
Coverage checks for browser tabs, Google results and iPhone and Android home screens
Manifest checks for 192px and 512px icons, maskable icons and theme-color
A preview of the page as a Google result
Markup for the full icon set, with placeholders for missing files

One Icon Is Never Enough

Browsers want a small icon for the tab. Google wants a square one it can show next to results, ideally larger than 48 pixels. iPhones look for an apple-touch-icon when someone saves the site, and Android reads 192 and 512 pixel icons from the web app manifest. Most sites cover some of these and miss others, and the checks are grouped by where each icon is used so the gaps are obvious.

Declared Is Not the Same as Working

A favicon tag that points at a deleted file still sits in the HTML and fails quietly. Every icon is requested, and the table shows its status, file type and size, so a 404 left over from a redesign, or an HTML error page served where an image should be, shows up straight away. /favicon.ico is tested even when no tag mentions it, because browsers and many tools ask for it first.

Markup You Can Paste

The last block is the set of tags a complete favicon setup needs, filled in with the site's own files where they exist and placeholders where they don't. Hand it to whoever edits the site's head, or use it as a list of the files still to make.

Common Use Cases

  • Downloading a site's icon at the best size it has
  • Checking a new site's favicon setup before launch
  • Working out why a favicon is missing from Google results or a home screen
  • Clearing out icons a rebrand left behind

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Favicon Extractor & Checker free?

Yes. It's free with a ProxyHorizon account, and every account gets 25 runs a day shared across all our data tools. You can read about the tool without signing in, but running it needs an account because each run fetches live data.

Why doesn't my favicon show in Google?

Google needs a square icon it's allowed to crawl, declared with a link tag on the homepage, and recommends one larger than 48×48 pixels. If every check passes and it still doesn't show, give it time: Google picks up favicon changes when it recrawls the homepage, which can take days or weeks.

What is a maskable icon?

An Android home-screen icon with padding around the logo, so the system can crop it into a circle or rounded square without cutting anything off. Without one, Android shrinks the regular icon onto a plain background.

Does it use a real browser?

It reads the page with a plain request first, which is fast and shows exactly what the HTML declares. If the site turns plain requests away, it loads the page in a real browser instead.

Do you store my results?

No. We log which tool you ran, what you entered and when, so we can apply the daily limit. Results aren't saved, so export them as CSV or JSON if you want to keep them.
